A senior thesis project by Dominic Soo at the Hench DADA Animation and Digital Arts program, University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.
While Dominic was studying in Florence the year before, he imagined a group of robots playing on a beach. Shortly after, the story for Robbie 3.0 soon developed into place. The movie centers around the life of a cleaning robot, and the importance of him moving on despite setbacks he faces. While adorable, the movie is also a critique on the short lifespan of technology and society’s constant need to feed itself with newer and better things.
The entire film took about one and a half years from conceptualization to completion, and features a DIY miniature set made out of foam core and various doll house pieces. It also features a staircase from Barbie’s Dream House. The interiors were shot on top of his kitchen table, while the exteriors were shot on a beach in Malibu, California.
The film has achieved notable placements in various film festivals including the Cleveland International Film Festival, Adobe First Frame, and most recently the RiverRun International Film Festival.
